Chapter 40: Preparations
354 words
December arrived, bringing with it a bitter, freezing wind that matched the atmosphere inside Daniel’s Manhattan office. The financial hemorrhaging at Sunset Haven was perfectly on schedule. Daniel summoned his external legal counsel, a team of high-priced, ruthless restructuring attorneys.
"I need you to begin drafting the Chapter 11 Reorganization petitions immediately," Daniel ordered, sliding a grim set of balance sheets across the polished conference table. "We have reached critical insolvency. I want the filings locked, sealed, and ready to submit to the federal bankruptcy court exactly three days before the annual audit."
The lead attorney adjusted his glasses, meticulously reviewing the catastrophic numbers. "Mr. Mercer, this is a total wipeout. To maximize the audited deficit before the fiscal year closes, we should execute aggressive Tax-loss harvesting. We can liquidate the remaining viable medical equipment assets at a severe discount to lock in the capital losses on paper today."
"Do it," Daniel commanded without hesitation. "Liquidate everything that isn't physically bolted to the floor. I want the final audited loss to be undeniably devastating. Leave no room for the auditors to claim viability."
As the lawyers scrambled to prepare the final death blow to the company, Daniel felt a twisted, heavy sense of peace. He had finally done it. He had navigated the maze, outsmarted the compliance traps, and built a pyre big enough to save his family from the crushing weight of the system.
It was 8:00 PM, the night before the bankruptcy documents were scheduled to be filed. Daniel was packing his briefcase in the quiet office when the television mounted on the wall interrupted its regular broadcast. The local news anchor looked uncharacteristically tense.
"We interrupt this program for an emergency press conference from the Governor's office," the anchor announced.
Daniel froze, his hand resting on the handle of his briefcase. The screen cut to the state capitol, where the Governor was standing behind a podium, holding a thick stack of legislative documents.
"Tonight, to combat the escalating crisis in our elder care infrastructure..." the Governor began, his voice echoing in the silent room.
Daniel’s blood turned to ice.
