Chapter 19: The First Offer
329 words
The break lasted an hour. When they returned, Thorne didn’t sit down. His lead attorney cleared his throat, avoiding Julian’s eyes.
“We are prepared to make a comprehensive settlement offer to resolve all claims,” the lawyer said. He slid a check across the polished wood toward Elena.
Elena looked down. The number was staggered: $500,000.
Five hundred thousand dollars.
Her breath caught. That was her student loans. That was Arthur’s medical bills. That was a house. That was food for the next ten years. Her stomach cramped with hunger; she hadn't eaten a real meal in two days. The structured settlement calculator in her head spun wildly.
“There is one condition,” the lawyer added smoothly. “A standard non-disclosure agreement. You cannot speak to the press, you cannot discuss the terms, and you withdraw the class action claim.”
Elena’s hand hovered over the check. Her fingers were trembling. It was the easy way out. The safe way. She could disappear, safe and warm.
She looked at Julian. He wasn’t looking at the money. He was watching her, his jaw set, waiting for her decision. He wouldn't stop her. He knew how much she was suffering.
Then she looked at Thorne. He was watching the check, his eyes gleaming with contempt. He thought he could buy her. He thought she was just another liability to be paid off like a leaky roof.
Elena picked up the check. The paper felt crisp and expensive.
“You think my silence costs half a million?” Elena asked softly.
Thorne smirked. “It’s a generous offer for a librarian.”
Elena ripped the check in half. Then in quarters.
Thorne’s smile vanished.
“I don’t want your money,” Elena said, throwing the confetti of paper back at him. “I want your reputation. I want everyone to know what you did.”
She stood up, her legs finally steady. “We’ll see you in court, Mr. Thorne. And we’re bringing the cameras.”
