Chapter 25: A New Home
267 words
The tears of relief dried, replaced by the crisp efficiency of action. Elena moved Arthur into 'The Willows,' a private facility where the ratio of nurses to patients was one-to-one. The private nursing care costs were exorbitant, but Elena wrote the check without her hand shaking.
Next, the student loans. She logged into the portal that had been the source of her nightmares for a decade. She typed in the full balance, clicked 'Pay Now,' and watched the screen turn from angry red to zero balance green. She sat in her car and screamed for joy.
Later that afternoon, she walked into Julian’s strip-mall office. She placed a cashier's check on his desk. It was for double his contingency fee.
Julian looked at the check, then up at her. He pushed it back. "Elena, the contract was for thirty percent. This is... I can't take this."
"It's high net worth wealth management," she joked, though her voice was thick with gratitude. "You saved my life. Take it."
Julian stood up, walking around the desk. The intensity in his gaze shifted from professional to something softer, terrifyingly personal.
"I don't want the extra money," Julian said, leaning against the edge of the desk, crossing his arms. "I want you to buy me dinner. Somewhere that doesn't serve food in a wrapper."
Elena felt a blush heat her neck, a sensation she hadn't felt in years. "No billable hours?"
"No billable hours," Julian smiled, and it was the first time she realized how handsome he truly was when he wasn't fighting a war for her.
