Chapter 3: Insult to Injury

332 words

Elena stared at the brochure, her face burning with humiliation. Thorne wasn’t just refusing to help; he was evicting her grandfather with a smile. The silence in the office was suffocating, broken only by the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner—counting down seconds she couldn't pay for.

“I’m taking him,” Elena said, her voice barely a whisper. “I’m taking him out of here today.”

Thorne’s smile didn’t waver. He tented his fingers. “You are free to do that, of course. However, per your contract, immediate withdrawal without a 90-day notice triggers the early termination clause.”

He tapped a specific paragraph on his computer screen. “The exit fee is ten thousand dollars. Payable prior to patient release.”

Elena felt the blood drain from her face. Ten thousand. She had forty-two dollars in her checking account.

“You can’t hold him hostage,” she choked out.

“It’s a business, Ms. Vance. Not a charity. breaking nursing home contract terms has consequences.” Thorne turned back to his paperwork, dismissing her as if she were nothing more than a stubborn stain on his carpet. “Close the door on your way out.”

Elena stumbled out of the office, blinded by tears of frustration. She needed an eviction defense lawyer—for her grandfather and, terrifyingly, maybe for herself. The walls of the hallway seemed to close in, shrinking her world down to a suffocating tunnel.

She drove home in a daze, her mind racing through options that didn't exist. payday loans? Emergency cash no credit check?

When she reached her apartment complex, the sun was setting, casting long, jagged shadows against the peeling paint of her building. She trudged up the stairs, her body heavy with exhaustion, just wanting to collapse.

But she stopped dead on the landing.

A bright neon orange sticker was pasted to her door, glowing toxic in the dim hallway light. The bold black letters screamed the one thing she couldn't handle: PAY OR QUIT.
