Chapter 30: Full Circle
250 words
Elena’s heart didn't hammer. Her hands didn't shake. The old Elena would have panicked at the sight of Marcus Thorne lurking at the gate like a ghost, but the woman standing in the satin gown simply observed him.
Thorne gripped the bars, his knuckles white. His Italian suit was gone, replaced by a stained windbreaker. He opened his mouth to shout, perhaps to scream an obscenity or beg for money, but the sound died in his throat when he saw the look on her face.
She didn't look angry. She looked bored.
"Security," she said calmly into the small earpiece the coordinator had given her. "We have a trespasser at the North Gate."
Two large men in dark suits materialized from the hedges. Thorne tried to scramble back, but he was slow, ruined by the very poverty he used to inflict on others.
Elena turned her back on him before the handcuffs even clicked. finding peace after trauma meant realizing the monster was just a small, sad man.
She walked back toward the light of the reception tent. Julian was waiting for her on the dance floor, his hand extended.
"Everything okay?" he asked, scanning her face.
"Perfect," Elena said. She took his hand, stepping into his arms.
Outside, the red and blue lights of a police car flashed silently against the estate walls as Thorne was hauled away for violating probation. Elena didn't look. She spun into the music, surrounded by the people she loved, finally, truly free.
