Chapter 12: The Alleyway Escape

234 words

The sirens weren't coming; they were here. Blue and red lights bounced off the strip mall storefronts like a disco from hell.

I scrambled out the back exit just as tires screeched out front. My boots slammed against the wet pavement of the alley. I didn't look back. I ran past overflowing bins and rotting cardboard, my lungs burning as if I’d inhaled fire.

I dove behind a massive steel dumpster, pressing my back against the cold metal.

"Check the perimeter!" a voice shouted.

I slid down into the filth, covering my mouth to stifle a sob. The smell of garbage was overwhelming, triggering a wave of nausea. If they found me, I’d be arrested. No one would believe a 'dead' woman claiming fraud. They’d think I was crazy.

My vision swam. The stress, the lack of food, the sprint—it was too much. A Medical Emergency now would act as a death sentence. The Ambulance Cost alone would bankrupt me if I wasn't already at zero.

"Clear on the south side!"

The footsteps faded. I tried to stand, but my legs turned to jelly. The world tilted sideways. I clutched the folder to my chest—my only shield against Barbara.

Darkness encroached from the edges of my vision. The 911 Dispatch chatter from the distant cruiser radios was the last thing I heard before the ground rushed up to meet me.
