Chapter 30: A New Legacy
260 words
The smoke from the bonfire had long cleared, replaced by the crisp, clean air of a new spring. I stood on the balcony where Barbara used to sip her morning mimosas while judging the gardeners. The view was the same—rolling green lawns, the distant city skyline—but the woman looking at it had changed.
I wasn't the gaunt, hoodie-wearing widow anymore. I wore a tailored black blazer, my hair sharp and styled.
Down below, a team was setting up a tent for the gala. The Mark Vance Foundation. It was my answer to the darkness—a massive Philanthropy effort dedicated to helping victims of insurance fraud and domestic abuse navigate the legal system.
"Ms. Vance?" My assistant, a bright young woman who reminded me of who I used to be, poked her head out the French doors. "The guests are arriving."
"I'll be right there," I said.
I touched the iron railing, cold under my palm. I was healthy. My cancer scans were clear. I was wealthy, Financial Freedom secured for a lifetime. But most importantly, I was free of the fear that had dictated my life for so long.
I raised a glass of sparkling water to the blue sky. "We did it, Mark," I whispered.
There was no answer, just the wind in the trees, but for the first time, the silence didn't feel lonely. It felt peaceful. I turned my back on the view and walked into the house, ready to write my own Happy Ending. The nightmare was over. My life had finally begun.
