Chapter 7: The Ghost Walk

231 words

I was a ghost haunting the city streets. My clothes were stiff with dried river mud, and I shivered uncontrollably under the neon glow of storefronts.

Two days. I had been walking for two days. Hunger was a sharp cramp in my stomach, worse than the pain in my ribs. I avoided the Homeless Shelter; Barbara had eyes everywhere, and I couldn't risk a paper trail.

I huddled near an electronics store, seeking warmth from the vent. A wall of TVs in the window broadcast the local news.

Suddenly, her face filled the screens.

Barbara.

Dressed in immaculate black, dabbing dry eyes with a lace handkerchief. A banner at the bottom read: TRAGIC SUICIDE OF LOCAL WIDOW.

"She was so depressed after Mark passed," Barbara sobbed, her voice cracking perfectly on cue. "We tried to get her help. We knew she might do this."

My jaw tightened until my teeth ached. She was spinning a Defensive Lawsuit narrative before I was even found. Defamation didn't apply to the dead.

"We just ask for privacy," she added, looking directly into the camera. "And prayers."

I saw the reflection of a haggard, dirty woman in the glass. Nobody would believe that woman over the grieving matriarch of the Vance family. I turned away, pulling my hood lower. If she wanted me dead, I’d be dead. Until I was ready to bury her.
