Chapter 25: Total Collapse
303 words
Preston was dragged out the double doors, screaming empty legal threats that nobody in the room cared to hear. Victoria followed right behind him, her expensive heels dragging across the country club carpet as she sobbed uncontrollably.
The flashing red and blue lights of the squad cars illuminated the grand ballroom windows. The reign of the Montgomery-Vance family was officially over.
I stood on the stage, taking a deep, shuddering breath. The heavy weight of the bogus medical bills and the fraudulent lien on my house suddenly lifted from my shoulders.
Down in the front row, Beatrice was frantically trying to gather her things. She shoved her fake designer purse under her arm and kept her head down, inching toward the side exit.
She wasn't clutching her chest anymore. Her miraculous recovery from her fake heart condition was fully complete now that her financial fraud ring had been exposed.
But the community wasn't going to let her slip away into the night.
Mrs. Higgins stepped right into the aisle, blocking Beatrice's path. Soon, three other homeowners who had been previously terrorized by HOA fines joined her, forming a human wall.
"Excuse me," Beatrice snapped, her voice trembling but still laced with her trademark arrogance. "I am an elderly woman, and I need to go home."
"You aren't going anywhere, Beatrice," Mrs. Higgins said, her arms crossed firmly. "The police want a statement from you regarding your daughter's criminal charges."
Beatrice looked around like a trapped rat. She spun back toward the stage, locking eyes with me.
For the first time since I met her, there was no smugness, no fake sweetness, and no sneer. There was only absolute, naked terror.
The police officers re-entered the ballroom, walking straight toward her with a notepad. It was finally time to pay the piper.
