"Nice to meet you, Sarah," I said, walking over to the property line. The Golden Retriever immediately shoved his head through the bushes, demanding scratches. "I'm Mike."
"Sorry for the chaos," Sarah laughed, wrestling a box out of her trunk. "I'm a middle school teacher, and I own way too many books. I just closed on the real estate deal last week. This is my first house."
"Congratulations," I smiled warmly, petting the dog. "It's a great neighborhood. Very quiet."
We chatted for a few minutes about the area. She was polite, humble, and completely normal. No designer clothes, no arrogant demands, and definitely no fake pearls.
That evening, I logged into my farm delivery app. I went into the settings, removed the "Cash Only" restriction, and reinstated my daily automatic payments. It felt like a small, but significant victory.
I slept deeply that night, completely unbothered by motion alerts or the fear of impending lawsuits. My homeowner's insurance couldn't protect me from crazy, but thankfully, the crazy had moved away.
At 6:15 AM the next morning, the sun was just beginning to peek over the trees.
I walked out onto the front porch in my pajamas, feeling the cool morning air on my face.
I stepped up to the insulated cooler. For a brief second, the old anxiety fluttered in my chest. What if I opened it and it was empty again?
I took a breath and flipped open the lid.
There, sitting perfectly in the morning frost, were two beautiful glass bottles of organic milk. They hadn't been touched, tampered with, or stolen.
But there was something else sitting on top of the cooler.
It was a small, colorful tin box wrapped in a simple ribbon. Attached was a handwritten note on a piece of notebook paper.
Mike - Thanks for the warm welcome yesterday! Made a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies to celebrate the move. - Sarah & Buster (the dog).
I picked up the cold milk and the warm cookies, a massive smile spreading across my face. It was going to be a great morning.
