Chapter 40: The New Owner
214 words
The sun was setting, casting a warm, golden glow over the estate. It didn't look like a fortress anymore. The gate was wide open. I parked and walked toward the main entrance, passing a new sign: The Miller-Vance Legal Aid Center. Inside, the foyer where I had once scraped paint was now bustling. Lawyers were giving free advice to families who looked just as scared as I used to be. Vance was in the conference room, arguing on behalf of a mechanic against an insurance giant.
This wasn't just finding happiness; it was creating it. I had used the estate planning funds to ensure this place would run long after I was gone.
I walked out to the terrace. The air was crisp. I had a movie deal, a law named after me, and a man who loved me for my grit, not my net worth. But mostly, I had peace.
I looked at the horizon. The sky was a brilliant violet. The long, cold night of my life was finally over.
I turned back to the house. The lights inside were warm and inviting, filled with the hum of justice being served. I stepped through the French doors and closed them behind me, shutting out the past forever. I was finally home.
