Chapter 27: The Settlement
311 words
Elena didn’t hang up. She agreed to meet him at a small diner three blocks from the tower. When she arrived, Marcus Sterling—the man who once wore suits worth more than her father’s car—looked like a ghost.
His tie was undone, his hair dull and messy. He sat in a vinyl booth, nursing a black coffee. When Elena slid into the seat across from him, he flinched.
"I can make it go away," he said, sliding a thick envelope across the sticky table. "The assault charge. The video. I have liquid assets. A structured settlement."
Elena didn't touch the envelope. "You want to buy my silence?"
"Three million," Marcus hissed, his eyes darting around the diner as if he expected paparazzi to jump out of the sugar dispenser. "It’s a massive lawsuit payout. You could retire. You could fix the building without lifting a finger."
Elena looked at the envelope. It was enough money to never worry again. It was tempting.
"You think this is about money," she said softly. "You tried to steal my family's legacy. You humiliated my staff. You physically attacked me."
"I'm offering you a way out!" Marcus snapped, his old arrogance flickering for a second. "Take the money. You need negotiation skills to survive in this city, Elena. This is a win for you."
Elena reached for the envelope. Marcus exhaled, a smug smile touching his lips. Then, slowly, deliberately, Elena ripped the envelope in half. The sound was louder than a gunshot in the quiet diner.
"I don't want your money, Marcus," she said, dropping the torn paper into his coffee mug. "I want your reputation repair to be impossible. I want you to feel what it's like to be invisible."
She stood up, leaving him staring at the ruined check floating in the dark liquid. "See you in court."
