Chapter 29: The Promotion
287 words
The conference room was packed, but not with suits. It was filled with grey jumpsuits. The custodial staff, the maintenance crew, the security guards who had helped her—they were all there, looking nervous. They held their caps in their hands, unsure why the new owner had summoned them.
Elena stood at the head of the table. Beside her stood Sophia. The older woman looked anxious, wringing her hands.
"Thank you all for coming," Elena said. "I know the last few months have been hell. You were underpaid, overworked, and disrespected. That ends today."
She slid a stack of papers forward. "These are new union contracts. I've negotiated a fair wage for every single department. We are setting a new standard for this city."
A murmur of shock went through the room.
"And," Elena continued, turning to Sophia, "we need a new Building Manager to oversee operations. Someone who knows every inch of this tower and knows the people who make it run."
She handed Sophia a folder. "Sophia, this is your promotion raise. It comes with the corner office on the second floor and full benefits."
Sophia stared at the paper. Her hands shook as she read the salary figure. It was enough to restore the life that had been stolen from her years ago.
"Elena..." Sophia choked out, tears spilling over. "You don't have to..."
"I do," Elena smiled, her own eyes misting. "You were the only one who saw me when I was invisible."
Sophia dropped the folder and pulled Elena into a crushing hug. The room erupted in cheers, caps thrown in the air. For the first time in years, the knot of trauma in Elena's chest unspooled. She wasn't just surviving anymore.
