Chapter 19: Paranormal Activity

Barbara didn't sleep the rest of the night. By morning, she looked haggard, her perfect facade cracking. She screamed at the maids, firing two of them on the spot for "whispering behind her back."

It wasn't enough. We needed the confession.

The next night, I didn't just speak. I acted. While she was in the bath, drowning her paranoia in Chardonnay, I slipped into the house. I moved Mark's favorite urn from the mantle to her pillow.

I was back in the van before she finished drying off.

Through the camera, we watched her walk into the bedroom. She froze. The glass of wine slipped from her hand, shattering on the hardwood.

She scrambled for her phone, her fingers fumbling over the screen. She dialed Gary.

"She's here! She's haunting me!" Barbara screamed into the receiver. "Linda! She knows I forged the signature! She knows about the poison!"

Miller and I locked eyes. The wiretapping laws were tricky, but since Gary was also under investigation for other frauds Miller had dug up, we had a warrant for his phone. We were recording both sides.

Gary’s voice crackled through the speaker, panicked. "Shut up, you old bat! She's dead! You saw the body! We doctored the records! Stop talking or you’ll ruin the payout!"

"I can't take it, Gary! The money isn't worth a ghost!"

"It's five million dollars!" Gary shouted. "Just get the check tomorrow and leave the country. Do not crack now."

Miller hit the stop button on the recorder. A slow, predatory smile spread across his face. "Admissibility of evidence secured."
