Chapter 22: The Denial

276 words

The CEO of Apex Life looked from me to the diary, then to Gary. "What is the meaning of this?"

"She's an imposter!" Barbara screeched, pointing a manicured finger at me. Her face was twisted into a mask of ugly desperation. "My daughter-in-law died of cancer! This woman is a con artist trying to steal my family's legacy!"

Gary scrambled toward the table, trying to grab the documents I’d thrown down. "She's right! Security! Get this crazy woman out of here! This is harassment!"

"Don't touch that," a deep voice boomed from the doorway.

We all turned. Miller walked in, badge hanging around his neck, flanked by the Police Captain and two uniformed officers.

Gary froze, his hand hovering inches from the diary. He looked at the shredder in the corner, then back at the cops. It was over.

"But... she's dead!" Barbara yelled, stomping her foot like a toddler. "I have the ashes!"

"Those ashes are from a fireplace, Mrs. Vance," Miller said, stepping into the room. He held up a black USB drive. "And we have the audio."

He plugged it into the presentation laptop. Barbara's voice filled the room, amplified by the surround sound speakers intended for the ceremony.

"She knows I forged the signature! She knows about the poison!"

The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating. The CEO’s face turned purple. He looked at Gary. "You approved this?"

"She made me!" Gary squealed, pointing at Barbara. "She threatened to tell my bookie where I live!"

"Perjury, Obstruction of Justice, Insurance Fraud," the Captain listed off, walking toward Barbara. "And thanks to this audio, we're adding a few more."
