Chapter 17: The Confession

244 words

The crunch of glass was sickening, a sharp snap that echoed in the cavernous lobby. Elena flinched as Marcus ground his expensive heel into the tablet, putting his full weight into destroying the screen. Shards skittered across the wet marble.

"OOPS," Marcus laughed, the sound bouncing off the high ceilings. He crouched down, his cologne overpowering the scent of rain and old mop water. "Did you really think a janitor could outsmart me? I’ve spent two years engineering this takeover. I tanked the stock price. I fed the board lies about your father’s solvency."

Elena wiped blood from her lip, her heart hammering against her ribs. This was corporate fraud, plain and simple. If she had a recorder, she’d be rich.

"I poisoned the frantic little investors until they begged me to buy," Marcus sneered, standing up and straightening his bespoke suit. "And you think a wired funds transfer on a cracked iPad could stop me?"

He turned his back, already celebrating his victory, completely missing the flicker of light beneath his shoe. The tablet wasn't dead. Amidst the spiderweb of cracks, a bright green bar pulsed one final time.

Elena squinted through her swollen eye. The pixels were distorted, but the message was clear. Her breath hitched. The whistleblower payout she might get for his confession was nothing compared to this satisfaction.

The cracked screen flashed green. TRANSACTION COMPLETE. The building's debt was paid in full by the new lender.
