Chapter 21: The Reveal
210 words
The central aisle was long, lined with the very tenants who had stepped on her, spilled coffee on her, and treated her like furniture. As Elena walked past, the whispering started.
"Is that... the cleaning lady?"
Marcus spotted her. He faltered mid-sentence, then scoffed into the microphone. "Well, look who it is. Did you steal that suit from the lost and found, Elena? Security! Remove her!"
No one moved. Steve and his team stood like statues by the wall, arms crossed. Detailed commercial real estate protocols were strict about who gave orders, and Marcus was no longer the boss.
Elena didn't preserve her dignity with silence this time. She mounted the stairs to the stage. Marcus loomed over her, his smirk faltering as he saw the fire in her olive eyes.
"Get off my stage," he hissed.
"It's not your stage, Marcus. It's not your building." She snatched the microphone from the stand next to him. Feedback squealed.
She pulled a remote from her pocket and pointed it at the giant screen behind him. The presentation on 'Future Renovations' vanished, replaced by a stark bank confirmation.
She projects the bank confirmation onto the giant screen behind him. "I didn't just clean the floors, Marcus. I cleaned up the debt."
